Glutathione – A Simple Way To Boost Our Immune System

Glutathione is a potent antioxidant that is found in both plants and animals and known as the “body’s super hero” and many refer to it as also being the “master antioxidant” of the body  because it also boosts (recycles) other antioxidants, like Vitamin C and Vitamin E, as well as Alpha Lipoic Acid and CoQ10.

Glutathione is a peptide, specifically a tripeptide, which means it’s composed of three amino acids:

  • Cysteine

  • Glycine

  • Glutamic Acid (or glutamate)

Glutathione is not only one of the most vital antioxidants in the body for protecting our cells from disease and helping our skin to look brighter, healthier and more beautiful….BUT, Glutathione is also required by our immune system for two important reasons:

  • Glutathione protects our immune cells through its antioxidant mechanism

  • Glutathione provides optimal functioning of our lymphocytes and other cells of involved in our body’s immune system

Unfortunately though, things like a poor diet, pollution, toxins, pharmaceutical drugs, stress, trauma, aging, infections, and radiation all deplete the body’s glutathione levels. This leaves us vulnerable to cell disintegration from oxidative stress and free radicals, creating potential weaknesses and susceptibility of our bodies to poor health, more sickness, chronic and/or acute infections and cancers.

And so, our ability to produce and maintain a high level of glutathione in our bodies is critical to our body’s immune system, overall health and wellbeing as we age and our ability to recover from illnesses.

Additionally, other health promoting benefits that glutathione has been shown to do for our body:

  • powerful anti-inflammatory peptide by inhibiting the production of many of the inflammatory cytokines

  • help repair cells that were damaged by radiation, pollutants, stress, infection, and a range of other stressors

  • slow the aging process of our cells due to its powerful antioxidant capabilities, meaning it can slow down the aging and deterioration of our cells and aid in the self-repair of our cells, prolonging their functionality and lifespan.

In fact, a 2014 study suggests that the abundance of glutathione in the cells can help predict the life expectancy of an individual…check it out here:
S-linolenoyl glutathione intake extends life-span and stress resistance via Sir-2.1 upregulation in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Why is this?

The simple fact is that the amount of glutathione in our cells can benefit our health and ultimately our life expectancy by helping to protect cells from oxidative stress. And protecting cells from oxidative stress can absolutely prolong the health and life of the cells that make up our body’s organs, glands, muscles and tissues.

More Benefits:

  • dizziness

  • lack of energy

  • mental “fog”

  • coordination problems

How to Get Glutathione into our Body?

Glutathione is produced in our body by the liver as a normal function of the liver and can also be introduced with healthy eating habits, supplementation and nutritional IV therapy.

Foods – Healthy Eating

I have always told our Body N Balance clients to think of their food as their medicine.  The simple fact is that what we eat can be not only the best and most natural way to support our health but for the sake of today’s post, it can also help to raise your glutathione levels. And as usual, I suggest eating wholesome, non-GMO and organic foods.

And if you are one of those people who always seem to be battling some type of sickness or just not feeling 100% or feel you have a compromised immune system, then I suggest stocking your fridge with glutathione- and cysteine-rich foods to help give your immune system a healthy boost. Below are some ideas for healthy immune boosting and glutathione producing foods:

Sulfur-rich vegetables:

  • garlic

  • onions

  • kale

  • broccoli

  • callards

  • cabbage

  • cauliflower

Glutathione-rich fruits:

  • grapefruits

  • tomatoes (uncooked)

  • avocados

Here are some cysteine-rich foods to help boost your glutathione levels.

  • Eggs, specifically egg yolks

  • poultry

  • yogurt (avoid yogurt with added sugar or artificial sweetners)

  • red peppers

  • oatmeal

  • whey germ for its amino acid content

  • walnuts

  • asparagus

Supplements and IV Therapy

Although I can recommend a very good glutathione supplement, it is my opinion that one of the best ways to obtain the benefits of glutathione in your body is intravenously (IV).

Not only can we run Glutathione specific IV’s but we can also provide IV’s with B Vitamins and Vitamin C, which are vital for the body’s ability to produce glutathione. Nutrient IV therapy provides a fast and effective way to absorb these nutrients into your body because we are able to bypass the gut and liver.

So, combining a healthy diet and lifestyle along with good glutathione supplementation or regular glutathione IV infusions can help stimulate your body to produce more glutathione to support your health and immune system, slow down the aging process and help you feel more vibrant.

Make it a Healthy Day!!

Sincerely,
Dr. Cadwell
