WHAT IS PLANTAR FASCITIS?

On the bottom of our feet is a thick, spiderweb-like ligament that originates from the calcaneus (heel) and extends along the bottom of the foot, inserting at our metatarsals (mid foot bones). This ligament acts as a shock absorber for our feet and supports the medial arch of our feet, helping to support proper foot biomechanics and walking.

When this ligament is inflamed or irritated it causes pain that can start in the heel and ultimately radiate along the entire bottom of the foot as the condition worsens. Plantar fasciitis is a common orthopedic complaint that can be caused by a lot of wear and tear in your daily life, especially in those individuals that have pronation or supination issues of their feet or possibly an anatomic leg length inequality that has never been addressed.

Plantar FaciitisWHAT CAUSES PLANTAR FASCIITIS PAIN?
As one of the most common causes of heel pain across the country, plantar fasciitis develops as the plantar fascia is over-stretched repeatedly, causing tissue damage and inflammation in the area of the heel, creating pain. When our foot biomechanics are supported and in good working order the plantar fascia will act like a shock adsorbing bowstring, supporting the natural arch of the foot. If chronic and continual tension and stress are put on this fascial ‘bowstring’ then small tears can arise in the fascia causing tissues to become irritated and inflamed.

Individuals at greater risk for developing plantar fasciitis:

  • Anatomic Leg Length Inequalities
  • Foot Pronation or Supination Issues – Poor Foot Biomechanics
  • Muscle weakness in the lower legs or feet
  • Overweight. Extra weight creates increased pressure on your plantar fascia ligaments.
  • You are a regular Runner for exercise and/or competing.
  • You job requires you to be on your feet most of the day, such as working in a factory, restaurant, bar tending, etcetera.
  • Tightness of your calf muscles and/or achilles tendon.
  • Frequently wear shoes, sandals or flip-flops with soft soles and/or poor arch support.

HOW IS PLANTAR FASCIITIS TYPICALLY TREATED?
In traditional medical facilities Plantar Fasciitis pain is initially treated by prescribing rest and anti-inflammatory drugs. In certain cases, an acute plantar fascia injury may heal on its own however; when plantar fascia pain persists for several weeks or months and the symptoms become more severe, traditional treatment approaches have been to prescribe stronger anti-inflammatory drugs and cortisone injections. The challenge with this approach is that recent studies are showing that cortisone injections can cause further damage to the plantar fascia and potentially lead to more invasive procedures. The researchers concluded that the use of cortisone injections to treat chronic plantar fasciitis should be reevaluated, especially in light of the potential to further damage, breakdown or even rupture the plantar fascia ligament.
