Optimize and Support Digestion – A Simple Way To Boost Our Immune System

It seems that the use of over the counter and pharmaceutical drugs to treat symptoms for gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), gas and bloating, irregular BM’s, IBS, etc….has become the norm.  And although these things are common in our society, THEY ARE NOT NORMAL!

Our gut is the first line of defense for our body’s natural immune response and when you have an imbalanced gut and digestive system then you are at a substantially higher risk for sickness and disease.

Have you ever wondered how a coyote can eat ‘road kill’ that has been rotting on the side of the road for days and not get ill?  That ‘road kill’ is loaded with bugs and bacteria that are also consumed by the coyote.  The good news for the coyote is that her gut is so acidic (optimal Hydrochloric Acid – HCL) that when those bugs and bacteria enter her gut they are killed and ultimately eliminated with all the other waste when she has a normal bowel movement.

In the case of the average American, our diets have become so loaded with processed foods containing Bad Sugars, Bad Salts and Bad Fats, all of which perpetuate inflammation and imbalance in the gut, leading to a compromised digestion system and issues like ‘leaky gut’ which in turn lead to bacterial imbalances and foreign proteins getting into the blood stream which then lead to more body imbalances and greater risk of sickness and/or infections which then lead to the overuse of anti-biotics which then lead to more gut imbalance which then often leads to the chronic use of more anti-biotics and the need for more drugs to ultimately treat symptoms associated with poor digestion and the person wonders why they cannot get well or why they seem to always get sick or just not feel well.

When you take a drug for GERD, specifically a Proton Pump Inhibitor like Omeprazole, you are turning off the acid pumps in your stomach and ultimately making your digestion worse!  And because you are taking this drug, not only are you setting up a scenario where your symptoms are worse when you stop the drug due to the inhibition of acid in your gut the drug has caused but, you are also setting yourself up for another problem as it has been found that these types of drugs are now causing chronic kidney disease!  And so, instead of fixing the cause of the reflux, which 99.9% of the time is taking HCL, you have now added a 2nd problem to your list of ailments, poor kidney function!

The same can be said for anti-biotic use. Chronic utilization of anti-biotics in America has become a major problem and I think we are seeing that with all of the chronic sickness and disease so many people seem to be suffering with these days.  When you take an anti-biotic you are messing with your gut flora (micro-biome), aka our 2nd brain, and ultimately affecting not only your digestive function/health but also your mental well-being due to what is known as the Gut-Brain connection.  And so, do everything you can to avoid the anti-biotics!

So what to do?

Here are a couple of easy things to improve your digestion and boost your immune system:

Betaine HCL

As I said earlier, healthy stomach acid levels are the first line of defense in your body’s natural immune response. The body’s ability to produce adequate stomach acid, called hydrochloric acid can slowly decline with age. Lowered levels of hydrochloric acid (HCL) may stress the body’s immune health as well as the body’s overall health. Supplementing with betaine HCL at meals assists the digestive process by supporting gastric acid secretion. The point being, HCL is a frontline defense in supporting our body’s overall immune health.

My personal approach with every large meal I eat is:
1 HCL, 1 HCL Activator and 1 Digest Comprehensive Enzyme (I’ll discuss enzymes in an upcoming email…so stay tuned).

Take Prebiotics & Probiotics! And Avoid Antibiotics to Boost Your Immune Defenses…..and Mental Wellbeing!

If you’re all about your immune system, it’s important to make sure your gut is healthy. Why’s that? Because 70-80% of our immune tissue resides in our digestive tract! Therefore, it’s important to make sure you have a healthy gut and/or microbiome. The way to do that is to get plenty of prebiotics and probiotics into your diet.

Prebiotics are the food for your probiotics.  Think of the prebiotics as the soil. If you have existing gut issues from poor food choices of the past and/or chronic utilization of OTC or pharmaceutical drugs, including anti-biotics, then it is highly likely that the ‘soil’ in your gut to support the probiotics just isn’t sufficient.  If this is the case, then just taking a prebiotic alone may do nothing at all for you or even worse, create more issues.

Probiotics are the healthy bacteria (microbiome) that assist in your gut health and good digestion and elimination. A heathy microbiome is also vitally important to our Mental Health and Wellbeing.

You will find probiotics in fermented foods like kefir, yogurt (make sure no added sugar or artificial sweetners), kimchi, sauerkraut, and kombucha.

You want to avoid antibiotics if possible. Antibiotics kill bad bacteria, but they also attack and kill helpful bacteria in the gut as well, which can ultimately hinder your digestive and immune system from functioning appropriately.

So again, really try to avoid taking antibiotics unless you really need them. If you do have to take an anti-biotic then you can try to counter the antibiotics with some probiotic foods as well.

If you focus on building your microbiome then you can keep your digestive and immune system firing on all cylinders.

And one final note on this, just because a probiotic has more CFU’s than another probiotic doesn’t mean it is better.  Many of the  probiotics that people are taking state they have trillions of CFU’s on the bottle; however, many of those organisms are dead by the time you take the probiotic.  Not good!

Great Ways To Boost Your Immune System Naturally – Part 2

Vitamin D – A Simple Way To Boost Our Immune System

I have been attempting to educate our clients about the importance of Vitamin D to support our overall health and well-being for the last decade, especially as more and more research has surfaced on how powerful and important this Vitamin is for optimal health and immune support.

For most people, they’ve been told of the importance of vitamin D to maintain healthy bones, assist in bone growth and help with bone mineralization and absorption of calcium. However, the research is also showing us how powerful this little vitamin can be in helping our bodies fight specific disease conditions like cancer and cardiovascular disease but, from an overall immune support perspective, the research has shown us that our immune cells have vitamin D receptors and that Vitamin D will help modulate the inflammatory response of an already healthy immune system, especially during times of respiratory stress, which appears to be the biggest concern of COVID-19. However, it appears that to receive these benefits it is imperative that vitamin D levels are adequate enough to help activate immune cells and promote a healthy immune response.

Vitamin D Supplementation for Respiratory Infection

Vitamin D helps fight infections, including colds and the flu, by regulating the expression of genes that influence your immune system to attack and destroy bacteria and viruses.

And recent studies are showing us that there appears to be an association between low vitamin D levels and our risk of getting more colds as well as viral infections like influenza.

Dr. Roger Seheult, a pulmonologist in California, who has followed COVID-19 – a primarily upper respiratory virus – with extreme interest and has been posting regular updates on his you tube channel, discussed in one of his updates research published in 2017, which was a meta-analysis of 25 randomized controlled trials, confirming that vitamin D supplementation can help protect us from acute respiratory infections.

However, this 2017 meta-analysis showed us that it was daily or weekly supplementation of vitamin D that seemed to provide the protective benefit in people with low vitamin D levels.

The key here as I see it, is to make sure you have your vitamin D level checked at least 2x a year to ensure you are maintaining optimal D levels year around. In my personal research on this topic, I have decided that optimal levels for me appear to be in the range of 60 ng/ml to 80 ng/ml, and I try to not fall below 50 ng/ml.

An important note to keep in mind if you take a vitamin D supplement is that you will also increase your body’s need for vitamin K2. If you are deficient in Vitamin K2 it appears this can produce the symptoms of vitamin D toxicity. Also, many of you that have had me look at your vitamin D supplement I have found that it contained common fillers like corn oil and soy oil – not good and I don’t recommend these D supplements. We have a very good D3 serum that is highly bio-available and I recommend you take along with a product called OsteoVen that contains vitamin K2 as well as minerals to support bone health.

In closing, achieving optimal vitamin D levels should be a health and immune boosting goal for all of us, regardless of our current health status. This is a fact not only supported by the little bit of information I have shared to this point but also based on the fact that vitamin D deficiency has been linked to many of the chronic diseases we see in people today, including:
